"The Acquisition" by Dawn Trowell Jones
Ordinarily I would've posted my 5-star review of paranormal sci-fi author Dawn Trowell Jones' short story The Acquisition to Amazon and Goodreads, but as it is not officially an eBook I did not have that option. It was published in Mysterical-E’s January 2014 issue, and to read it you need only go to Jones' Published Works Page and click on the link.
I very much enjoyed reading The Acquisition, in fact I enjoyed it so much I felt compelled to read it again and post a review of it. I was thinking I must give it five stars somehow, because the writing style and atmosphere in the story are just excellent. Right from the start the reader is pulled into Celia's world of offices, walls, and hallways.
Just as she has finally worked her way up to a position of some merit, and is buried in the workload of a massively complex project, her boss decides to suddenly take her out of the loop so she can transport a package abroad (obviously a grunt-work task). But her anger at the blatant disrespect is forced to turn gradually into fear and curiosity as the mystery regarding the contents of the package is slowly unraveled.
